Agenda Item: VIII.H.

Consider/Approve Athletic Practice During the School Day

Preliminary Matters:

State Board Rules and Regulations §0520-1-2-.08 provides “all athletic practice within the regular hours of any school day must be approved on an annual basis by the local board of education; such action must be reflected in the minutes of the local board of education. All approved athletic practice during the regular hours of any school day shall conform to the same rules, regulations, and seasons as corresponding athletic practice outside the school day.”

Staff Recommendation:

For the 2010 – 2011 school year, I recommend that the Board approve allowing athletic practice during the school day. However, as we all should be well aware, with the Tennessee Diploma Project curriculum, it will be extremely difficult to continue to allow all sports a block of time during the school day and still be able to teach the standard curriculum. Such conflict between academics and athletics creates major problems with the scheduling of classes that all students must pass to graduate. Obion County Central only schedules basketball and football during the school day, whereas South Fulton has a block additionally for baseball and softball.
